Would sanding my deck be harmful?

When I was sanding my hardwood floor I did a practice run on my deck. Our handyman stopped by and told us not to sand the deck because the wood was treated with a chemical that has arsenic in it. We would like to refinish our deck but we are afraid of the arsenic. We are a little skeptical...is there a such thing as arsenic treated wood?
