How do I remove the metal stopper in a Delta bathroom faucet?

The bathroom is at home and has separate spigots for hot and cold water. Between the spigots is a vertical, metal stalk that raises and lowers the metal stopper. It works. However, I need to remove the metal stopper (eg take it out). How would I do it? I am not a handyman or plumber.
