What tools should be in everyone's toolbox, even if they are not exatly a "handyman"?

I'm a handyman in Sydney Australia. I started work with no tools at all. when I get a job I ask what tools do I need? then I buy it . My point is there are millions of tools available .many of them are useful majority are not . I still buying good tools. I know tomorrow will be another tool is coming better and cheaper.
