Question about homemade enclosures (paint)?

I'm trying to get a list together of the items I'll need to make mine, and need a tiny bit of help with the kind of paint to use. I'm going with polyurethane, but does it have to be varnish? Or can it be regular polyurethane paint? Sorry, I'm not a handyman haha :)
